TIP OF THE WEEK: Just changing your filter regularly and having an annual Tune-Up will greatly increase the life of your furnace and reduce the number of heating repairs. Proper filter size is always important. Filters usually need changing every month or so. Never place a smaller than required filter in the filter rack. That could lead to a dirty blower wheel and/or a dirty coil and cause excessive stress on your unit.

Cool Summer Ideas To Save Money
- During the summer, set the thermostat to as high a temperature as you find comfortable. The less your air conditioner has to work, the lower the energy cost.
- Attic fans are a great addition to any home. Removing the hot air from the attic will help to lower the overall cooling costs.
- Be careful when changing the cooling temperatures to often during the day. If you are only gone for a short period of time it may cost more to cool the house down again then the savings you had by increasing the temperature for that short period of time.
- Don't ever place anything that generates heat (like a lamp) close to the air conditioning thermostat. It could cause the thermostat to trigger the air conditioning unit to come on too often or the furnace not to come on.
- Ceiling fans can help greatly by circulating the cool air throughout an area. They are very effective and can lower your energy costs.
- Locate the outside condenser unit on the shady side of the home if possible. If that isn't possible, plant trees or shrubs close by without blocking the airflow, thereby providing shade for the unit. Shade can reduce the energy cost by as much as 10 percent.
- Just like changing the oil in your car regularly will increase the life of your car so will an annual tune up save money and increase the life of your air conditioner.
- Using window tinting may also help reduce energy costs.
Comfort Maintenance Agreements
Preventative maintenance can help reduce that costly repair later, and reduce utility bills now. Some people don't realize just how much your air conditioning and furnace systems really work. Between summer and winter, your HVAC system could work as much as 3,000 hours. To say that another way, if it was a car and you were driving 60 mph for that same period of time it would cover a distance of 180,000 miles. No one would think of driving their car that far without oil changes, tune ups and other maintenance and no one should have their HVAC systems running that long without proper maintenance either.
